We are going to use the brand-new Carhart trail from Pueblo Mountain Park to the historic Squirrel Creek trail (NFST 1384), then up Squirrel Creek past the picnic area up to the original Carhart-Cascade trail (NFST 1384.A), and then up that trail to it's upper junction with 1384. We will then have 2 options for the return trip.
Squirrel Creek was the 1st area that the National Forest Service built as a planned recreational area! It was designed by Arthur Carhart in 1919 and built over the next few years. Unfortunately, the area has fallen into disuse - in 1947 a flood took out all of the bridges in the canyon and the Forest Service stopped maintaining the area, except for the trail. In recent years a private landowner has restricted access to the canyon (from the bottom), but this new section of trail reopens access to this beautiful canyon.

There may be some stream-crossing challenges at this time of the year.
