Founded in 1912, the CMC is the oldest outdoor group in Colorado. The organization is dedicated to uniting the energy, interest, and knowledge of the students and fellow explorers; encouraging the preservation of forests, flowers, fauna, and natural scenery; and collecting and disseminating information regarding the Rocky Mountains on behalf of science, literature, art, and recreation.

Member Benefits

ACCESS TO OUTINGS

Enjoy the beauty of Colorado's outdoors in a variety of ways including hiking, climbing, skiing, backpacking, snowshoeing, and more. As a CMC member, your participation is not limited to just the Fort Collins Group. You're also welcome to join other groups across Colorado in their scheduled activities. The online statewide CMC Calendar provides information on all CMC trips. You'll also receive a quarterly Fort Collins Group newsletter and the CMC's semiannual magazine, Trail & Timberline.

ACCESS TO OUTDOOR EDUCATION

The Fort Collins Group runs several courses that provide education, training, and practical experience to enhance your outdoor expertise. These are designed to enable you to have a more meaningful and safer experience in the great outdoors. Our offerings include Mountain Hiking School, Alpine Scrambling, Basic Mountaineering, and for would-be leaders, our Trip Leadership Course.

SHARE YOUR INTEREST IN THE OUTDOORS WITH OTHERS

More than 300 individuals and families are members of the Fort Collins Group. Experience the camaraderie common among participants, whether on an outdoor excursion or at one of our program nights or get-togethers. Many of our members have developed lifelong friendships through participating in CMC gatherings.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

All of our leaders are volunteers that willingly dedicate their time to share their expertise with other members. Many simply want companionship on the trips they like to do, while others lead as a way of giving back to the community. Some have a special knowledge they share. CMC also partners with the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado State Parks, and Larimer County Parks to maintain trails and help on special projects through our Trail Days program. Regardless of your reasons for wanting to join Colorado Mountain Club, we encourage you to consider how you can make a difference. A day or two a year is all it takes!

TRIPS LED BY TRAINED LEADERS

Colorado Mountain Club trips are led by skilled leaders trained in planning, scouting, and leading backcountry hikes. This prevents hiking groups from veering off course, separating, or ending up in dangerous situations; very important considerations when you're venturing out into the wilderness.
