Youth Adventure Camps

 

Explore the mountains of Colorado this summer with the CMC Youth Education Program (YEP)! Specialized multi-day camps and courses offer outdoor skill-building and adventure, giving participants hands on experience rock climbing, hiking, paddling, and more! All programs are taught by experienced CMC staff who are excited to share their knowledge of adventure activities as well as teach important safety skills necessary for exploring the outdoors. We offer programs for a wide range of ages and all abilities. Enjoy an educational and exciting summer camp in Golden, Colorado through the CMC!

Adventure Day Camps:

 

Mountain Explorers: for participants entering grades 4th-7th

Make the most of your summer by exploring the diverse ecosystems that Colorado has to offer! Each day, you will explore a new area in Colorado’s Front Range, where you will get the chance to experience indoor and outdoor rock climbing, go “sledding” on a glacier, and get your feet wet paddling at a local reservoir. As a part of our Mountain Explorers Camp, you will get the chance to explore the varied activities and types of terrain that make Colorado so unique and special. You will make a field journal, learn about the '10 Essentials' and Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, build “survival” shelters, and gain some of the necessary skills to safely play in the mountains for years to come! (Day camp)

Maximum 12 participants

Cost: $350 CMC members/ $425 non-members. Learn about all the benefits of becoming a CMC member.

Course fees include instruction by AMGA certified Single Pitch Instructors and trained outdoor educators, equipment use, transportation to and from outdoor field sites, field journal, and snacks.

Course meets 9:00am-3:30pm daily, at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden. Drop-off and pick-up at the AMC

New for 2020: YEP will be offering Before Program Care (8:00am-9:00am) & After Program Care (3:30pm-5:00pm). More information upon registration.

 

Mountain Explorers: Summer 2020 Offerings


Rock Climbing Day Camps:

 

Outdoor Rock Climbing (younger): for participants entering grades 5th-8th

Take your summer to new heights with Outdoor Rock Climbing!  This program is tailored for younger participants with little to no rock-climbing experience. The week is packed with five full days of outdoor rock climbing, and activities focused on building both essential climbing skills and personal confidence in this new, exciting, and (sometimes) challenging sport. In this camp you will learn about outdoor safety, climbing equipment, knot tying, belaying and rappelling, and will experience this all in a small, supportive environment facilitated by highly skilled AMGA certified instructors. We’ll start the week out on real rock learning essential climbing skills, such as safety checks, belaying, and knot tying. After mastering these basics, the next four days will be spent honing skills at various climbing sites around the Front Range. There, you will be taught about outdoor climbing safety and etiquette, Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, practice rappelling, and learn techniques for various types of rock climbing. Spend a week challenging yourself with a new skill, making new friends, and exploring some of the beautiful parts of Colorado’s Front Range! (Day camp)

Outdoor Rock Climbing (5th-8th grade): Summer 2020 Offerings


Outdoor Rock Climbing (older): for participants entering grades 8th-11th 

Ready to take your climbing skills to the next level?  Join us for a week spent exploring different types of rock and their unique challenges, learning more advanced technical skills, climbing techniques, and fine-tuning the essential skill of rappelling. This program is catered to youth who are interested in outdoor climbing and are ready to go beyond the basics. Throughout this week you will advance your skills and techniques by learning the intricacies of climbing on various rock types and gaining an understanding of climbing grades and different types of climbing.  Each day we will travel to a new outdoor location, led by highly skilled AMGA certified instructors, and gain skills in small, supportive groups. We’ll start our week reviewing basic climbing safety, belaying, and knot typing, and then spend the rest of the week developing more skills, learning how to climb up overhangs, on faces, in cracks, and on slabs. We’ll dive into the differences between traditional and sport climbing and learn what it takes to climb a multi-pitch sport route. Previous climbing experience is recommended. (Day camp)

Outdoor Rock Climbing (8th-11th grade): Summer 2020 Offerings


Advanced Outdoor Rock Climbing: for participants entering grades 9th-12th and/or recent Highschool graduates

Up your outdoor rock-climbing game and gain the skills to become more independent within this sport! You’ll learn about and practice building anchors, understand advanced rope skills, hone your skills both on rope and bouldering outside, learn mental strategy, and gear placement and removal. Students who master this course progression will have the opportunity to lead outdoor sport climbs and follow a multi-pitch traditional rock-climbing route under the mentorship of YEP’s senior AMGA certified climbing staff. We’ll begin our week reviewing essential climbing skills and beginning to practice the art of lead belaying. Moving into the rest of the week, we’ll gain more practice on multi-pitch terrain, build confidence and skill in a lead climbing progression, and have the opportunity to follow 3-4 pitch traditional climbs. Previous climbing experience is required. (Day camp)

Advanced Rock Climbing: Summer 2020 Offerings


Overnight Adventure Camps:

 

Outdoor Leadership: for participants entering grades 9th-12th and/or recent Highschool graduates

Ready to up your outdoor skills and gain essential certifications for a possible future career in the outdoors? Join us for this unique week built for teens that are passionate about the outdoors and want to develop leadership and safety skills essential for any seasoned outdoorsperson. From our base camp in Golden Gate State Park, you will spend your days not only rock climbing and hiking, but learning to manage safety in rock climbing sites, gaining leadership skills while helping to run a day program for a group of YEP’s younger campers, and lead your own summit hike within your group. You will also walk away from this camp with a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification, accredited by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. (5-day, 4-night camp)

Maximum 10 participants

Cost: $525 CMC members/ $600 non-members. Learn about all the benefits of becoming a CMC member.

Course fees include instruction, transportation, meals, and WFA certification.

 

Outdoor Leadership: Summer 2020 Offerings


Summer Road Trip: for participants entering grades 8th-11th

Experience the best of Colorado on this 5-day 4-night trip!  We’ll travel to Penitente Canyon and Witches Canyon for rock climbing and hiking, explore (and sandboard) Great Sand Dunes National Park, and whitewater raft the Arkansas River. Evenings will be spent at camp, slacklining, cooking, sharing stories around the campfire, and sleeping underneath the stars. This week will truly cover all the bases of Colorado adventure, give you exposure to multiple types of adventure recreation, and leave you with an unforgettable experience!  Course instruction will encourage decision-making, teamwork, and personal challenge in a small group environment. (5-day, 4-night camp)

Maximum 10 participants

Cost: $675 CMC members/ $750 non-members. Learn about all the benefits of becoming a CMC member.

Course fees include instruction, transportation, meals, NPS admission, and whitewater rafting.

 

Summer Road Trip: Summer 2020 Offerings


Backpacking: for participants entering grades 9th-12th and/or recent Highschool graduates

Trade-in the city life and the screen time this summer for a week of Colorado fresh air and sleeping under the stars. On this adventure you will hike across Colorado's Rocky Mountains, summit peaks, gain confidence and friendships, all while learning the skills necessary for backcountry travel and navigation. As you gain experience in leadership roles and discover how to manage a successful team, you will become competent and comfortable with life on the trail. Over the course of the week you will move from being guided by YEP instructors to working/collaborating with your peers to guide your group. (6-day, 5-night camp or 5-day, 4-night camp)

Maximum 10 participants

Cost: 6 day: $575 CMC members/ $650 non-members, 5 day: $500 CMC members/ $575 non-members. Learn about all the benefits of becoming a CMC member.

Course fees include instruction, transportation, meals, and backcountry permits.

 

Backpacking: Summer 2020 Offerings


For-Teeners: for participants entering grades 8th-11th

Tackle one of Colorado’s biggest challenges this summer with our For-Teeners camp, and spend the week learning what it takes to summit one of the giants of the Colorado Rockies- a 14,000-foot peak! We'll start our week in Golden, getting our hiking feet underneath us with two days spent in Golden Gate State Park, where we'll not only physically prepare for our summit, but also gain essential skills for mountain safety. You will learn about the 10 essentials, Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, trail etiquette, mountain weather, lightning safety, and much more all while becoming confident in the preparation needed to hike a 14er. After two days spent in the Front Range, we'll pack our bags and head out early on day 3 to make a beautiful drive through central Colorado to base camp and explore the beautiful San Juan Mountains. After a delicious meal at camp and an early night sleep we will get an alpine start to attempt our summit of the impressive Handies Peak (elevation 14,048), where we'll use the knowledge and decision-making skills developed earlier in the week. Throughout this week, you will learn and use skills essential for safe preparation and travel in high altitude-alpine climates and will walk away prepared to be a competent and more self-sufficient member of future hiking and summit groups. (This unique course consists of Monday & Tuesday: day camp, and Wednesday-Friday: 3-day, 2-night camp)
