Snowshoeing

Field Day

 

 

Head out into the snow on a snowshoe excursion. Learn the basics of snowshoeing and tailor the educational content to meet your class’s needs. Focus on snow science and avalanche safety, or winter ecology and tracking.

In our snowshoeing program, students will:

Winter Ecology

  • Learn the basics of snowshoeing
  • Discover animal tracks and learn about winter ecology
  • Explore snow in the snow and learn about snow pack and layers

Avalanche Safety

  • Examine current conditions while snowshoeing in the field
  • Gain awareness of the powerful destructive forces of avalanches through hands-on activities
  • Practice using avalanche rescue equipment including beacons, shovels, and probes to work together with their team to conduct a mock rescue in the snow
  • Develop teamwork and decision-making skills with peers

 

Academic Standards & Additional Resources

 

Suggested Grades: 3-12

 

Group Size: 10-14 students

 

Available: Winter

 

Length: 2-4 hours 

 

Location: Brainard Lake, Herman Gulch, or other local site

 

Cost: $20/student

* scholarship application available upon registration

 

Suggested Pairings:
