Classes

Classes are held at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th St. in Golden

  • Class 1 – Thursday, June 8, Check in at 6:00pm, class starts promptly at 6:30pm
  • Class 2 – Wednesday, June 21, 6:30pm
  • Class 3 – Wednesday, July 12, 6:30pm
  • Class 4 – Wednesday, July 19, 6:30pm

Trips

  • Day Trip – June 17
  • Overnight Trip 1 – June 24 - 25
  • Overnight Trip 2 – July 15 - 16
  • 3-day Trip, dates to be determined by each group and will be completed by Sept. 30

Notes

The school is taught by instructors experienced in the Colorado Mountains and elsewhere, who have honed their skills and perfected their gear, who love to be outdoors and enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience.


Attendance & Graduation Policies:
The Denver Group Backpacking School is open to all CMC members 18 and older regardless of hiking classification and youth 15-17 years of age accompanied by a parent or guardian. Graduation from the school provides a B hiking classification and satisfies one of the requirements for a C classification.


The objective of the school is to graduate students with demonstrated proficiency in backpacking skills along with the knowledge and confidence to safely hike and backpack in Colorado's mountains and elsewhere. Graduation from the school will be based on the following:

  • Evaluations by the student’s group instructors
  • The student’s scores on assignments and tests
  • The student’s attendance in classes and outings. (Students are expected to attend all classes and outings. Formal make-up classes and outings are not planned. Absence may be waived if the student demonstrates proficiency in the topics addressed by the class or outing missed.)

Refund Policy:

  • Refunds of 100% (less a $10 processing charge) will only be made if a written request is made more than 30 days before the first class.
  • Refunds of 50% will be made if a written request is made within 30 days of the first class.
  • If a wait list has been established for the school, and a replacement is found, a member can receive a refund (based on the above schedule, less a $10 processing fee).
  • Requests for refunds should be sent to the school director.
  • No refunds will be made after the first class.
