Not quite as steep as the Manitou Incline, the Heizer nonetheless gains about 2000 feet in its first two miles. It then drops 500 feet into the North Fork of French Creek below Manitou Reservoir. After crossing the stream it rises towards Barr Trail. There's a meadow not far from the stream crossing where, if it's not too windy, we'll break for lunch and enjoy the view of Pikes Peak. Expect six hours RT and we'll lose cell service at times in the French Creek drainage.
Have traction and poles handy. This trail is all north-facing and any moisture will linger so portions could be snow packed/icy though it remains dry as of 10-31 and no moisture in is the current forecast. Very gravelly on the first section so poles recommended for stabilization on the descent. Optional beverage/meal meet-up afterwards.
Meet to carpool at the Westside Safeway at 8 a.m. or be at the park in Cascade ready to go at 8:30. Parking is limited so while carpooling is always optional it is encouraged in order to limit impacts on this small community.
Required Equipment
Traction, poles, layers, something warm to drink.
