Trip

Navigation – Missing Route/Place

This trip is intended for families with children that would like to get some basic background in the use of map and compass so families will be given priority during registration. I will put others on the wait-list and notify them the Tuesday before the trip if it is not full. My guess it would be boring for children younger than 10 years old, but we could discuss that. An adult relative must participate with the child. PLEASE EMAIL ME TO REGISTER at fccmcguy@gmail.com. DO NOT click the register button. In your email please let me know the number and ages of the children participating and the amount of experience they have (and the name of the adult participating). I want to get a feel for my audience. YOU MUST have a compass to participate, I will be sending out a pdf files with maps you will use during the trip. During the trip we will discuss the function/operation of a compass, why this skill is important even if you have a gps, how to orient a map, how to orient your location using the map/looking at your surroundings, how to take a bearing to determine where you are on a trial, how to triangulate to determine your location, and how to use your map and "The Big Picture" to recover if you get "misplaced". Due to limited time this will not make participants "experts", but it will give them a feel for how to use the tools. At the overlook we will discuss the energy/skill levels of the group to determine if we want to extend the hike a bit (only if the ENTIRE group agrees). IF we end early we will also discuss going out for brunch/pizza/other? We will set up carpools to group folks that want to participate in the after hike activity.
