Summer Adventure Courses - Ages 9-18

Youth Summer Course

Climb and explore the mountains with the CMC Youth Education Program! Specialized multi-day courses offer outdoor skill-building and adventure! We offer programs for a wide range of ages and all abilities. For more information call 303-996-2741 or e-mail dougmaiwurm@cmc.org


Day Camps

 

Mountain Explorers

Learn about Colorado's mountain ecosystems through discovery and adventure! Daily hiking and rock climbing field trips will strengthen observation, while participants practice basic survival and navigation skills needed for travel in the mountains. Participants will make a field journal, learn about the '10 Essentials' and Leave No Trace, build shelters, paddle a local reservoir (NEW), travel on snow, glacier sledding, and play games.

Ages: 9-12.  Maximum 12 and minimum 6 participants per session.

Course fee includes instruction by AMGA certified Single-Pitch Instructor and trained outdoor educators, equipment use, transportation to and from outdoor sites, field journal, outdoor safety kit, and snacks.

Course meets 9:00a - 3:30p, at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.


Rock Climbing Courses

 

Intro to Rock Climbing

Indoor and outdoor climbing instruction for youth with little or no climbing experience, but lots of interest! This five-day course focuses on technical rock climbing instruction, decision-making, and meeting new friends.

Participants will learn about outdoor safety, equipment, knot tying, belaying, and rappelling in a small, supportive environment. Five day format includes one day of indoor climbing and four days of outdoor climbing.

Ages: 11-14. Maximum 12 participants per session.

Course fee includes instruction by AMGA certified Single-Pitch Instructor and trained outdoor education staff, equipment use, transportation to and from outdoor sites, and snacks.

Course meets Monday - Friday, 9:00a - 3:30p, at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.  


Intermediate Rock Climbing

Do you want to gain experience on real rock and learn new techniques? This 5-day course is catered to youth with an interest in outdoor climbing and achieving personal goals.

Course content will encourage 'challenge by choice' as individuals work at advancing strength and technique on various rock types. Each day we will travel to a new outdoor location and practice climbing on different types of rocks and environments. Previous climbing experience is recommended.

Ages: 12-15. Maximum 12 participants per session.

Course fee includes instruction by AMGA certified Single-Pitch Instructor and trained outdoor education staff, equipment use, transportation to and from outdoor sites, and snacks.

Course meets Monday- Friday, 9:00a - 3:30p, at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.


Advanced Rock Climbing

This 5-day course was designed for teens who have taken a previous Intermediate Rock course, at least once. Our individualized course instruction will introduce the physics behind climbing through movement and gear placement. Participants will learn fundamentals of anchor building, practice a multi-pitch climb led by trained staff, and understand the skills needed to become 'independent' climbers. NEW: We are excited to add lead climbing instruction to this year's course! Previous climbing experience is required.

Ages: 14-18.  Maximum 9 participants.

Course fee includes instruction by AMGA Rock Guides and trained outdoor educators, equipment use, transportation to and from sites, and snacks.

Course meets Monday- Friday, 8:00a - 4:30p, at the American Mountaineering Center (AMC) in downtown Golden with daily field trips to local open space parks. Drop-off and pick-up is at the AMC.


Multi-Day Adventures

 

Peak Ventures Multisport Adventure – Rock, River, & Mountain

Experience the best of Colorado!  On this this 5 day trip we’ll spend our days climbing, paddling, and hiking in some of the state’s most iconic places.  Evenings will be spent around camp where participants will play games, cook, assist with chores, and share stories.  Course instruction will encourage decision-making and teamwork in a small co-ed group environment. We suggest participants come prepared to be flexible and understand the importance of working together.

In 2017 we’ll be heading to the Arkansas River Valley & Great Sand Dunes National Park!

Ages: 12-14. Maximum 10 participants 

Includes transportation, meals, lodging, instruction, NPS admission, and equipment.


Teen Ventures Backcountry Trekking

Explore the vast expanses of the remote Flat Tops Wilderness Area on foot! Find your true potential with 6 days of backpacking and advanced outdoor leadership skills. Teens lead each other while learning about their personal leadership style and skills. Live in the wilderness, summit peaks, and discover you can travel further than you thought possible!

Ages: 14-18 years

Maximum 9 participants.

Includes transportation, meals, backcountry permits, instruction, and any necessary gear.


Teen Ventures Multisport Adventure – Rock, River, & Mountain

Teen Ventures' Outdoor Leadership Summit

Have what it takes to lead? Join Teen Ventures for its flagship 5-day camping and outdoor skill-building retreat, set in stunning Golden Gate Canyon State Park! This program is designed to teach the basics of group management, rock climbing site safety, wilderness first aid, and teambuilding facilitation, as they pertain to outdoor leadership. And, of course, to have a LOT of fun!

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to hike, camp, climb, and play games with other teens, while gaining important training necessary to pursue jobs in the field of outdoor leadership! NEW: Participants will receive a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification, accredited by the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. Completion of this camp also qualifies students for a YEP internship.

Ages: 14-18 years

Maximum 10 participants.

Includes transportation, meals, lodging, instruction, WFA certification, and any necessary gear.
