Get ready for the ultimate winter adventure! Join CMC Youth Programs for Ice Climbing! Learn the basics and beauty of ice climbing this winter in our "Introduction to Ice Climbing" course. Day 1; will take place in the classroom where you'll learn about the gear, techniques, and skills needed to climb frozen faces! Day 2; we will head out to put your new knowledge to the test with 4 hours of ice climbing at Camp Alexander in Lake George, CO!

Course Itinerary:

Day 1 (2/20/27): CMC Base Camp - Classroom Session (3:00PM-6:00PM)
Day 2: (2/21/27): Camp Alexander - Ice Climbing! (9:00AM-8:00PM)


Registration Details:

  • Age: 12-18 Years-old
  • Dates: February 20th & 21st , 2027 
  • Time:
    • Saturday, February, 20th – 3:00pm-6:00pm
    • Sunday, February, 21st – 3:00pm-6:00pm
  • Location: Each day, we will meet and start our day at the Colorado Mountain Club (15605 West 32nd Ave, Golden, CO, 80204). This is a 2 session day camp. Day 1 will take place at our location above and day 2 will happen at Camp Alexander - transportation provided.

  • Prerequisites: Participants must have taken a Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Rock Climbing Course at CMC.  If you have not taken a Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Rock Climbing Course, please reach out to youth@cmc.org to see if this course is appropriate for your student. 


MOUNTAINEERING BOOTS (REQUIRED):

Mountaineering boots are a required piece of gear for Ice Climbing. We do not provide Mountaineering boots for this course (**Note: we DO PROVIDE crampons & ice tools). Boots can be rented from a number of different gear shops. Please plan ahead, its best to reserve boots in advanced and pick them up a day or two before the program. Participants must have boots for both days of the program, including the class room session. See below is a list of providers (note: the below information may differ from each dealers official website):
  1. Bentgate Mountaineering: (1313 Washington Ave, Golden, CO 80401)

    Reservations are available for pickup after 3PM the day before the scheduled reservation period and due back at 12PM the day after the reservation period. Bentgate Mountaineering is open 10am-7pm M-F, and 10AM-6PM Sundays. Bentgate is CLOSED SATURDAYS, all Saturday reservations must be picked up ON Friday evening after 3PM. Saturday rentals CANNOT be picked up on Saturday. The smallest size boots that Bentgate rents are 37 EU (around 5.5-6 US). RENT HERE

  2. Neptune Mountaineering: (633 S Broadway Unit a, Boulder, CO 80305)

    Reservations at Neptune are available for pickup after 2PM the day before the scheduled reservation or anytime the day of the scheduled reservation. Rentals are due back on the scheduled return date, or by 11PM the day after the reservation period. Neptune Mountaineering is open daily 9am-7pm (holidays may vary). The smallest size boots that Neptune rents are 38 EU (around 5.5-6 US). RENT HERE

  3. MOUNTAIN CHALET: ( 15 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903)

    Reserve your gear online using or come visit there Colorado Springs store and they'll help you set everything up. Pick up your gear in store after 3PM the day before your rental period starts. Returns all gear before 12PM the day after your rental period ends to return gear clean and in the general condition it went out. RENT HERE

  • Please note, if you have an individual membership and wish to sign up your child, you will need to create a separate guest account with a different email. You can also choose to upgrade your individual membership to a family membership to be able to register your child on your account and receive the discount.

  • Course fees include instruction, shared group gear (ex: ropes), harnesses, helmets, ice tools, transportation from the CMC to/from field locations, snacks, and facility fees.

    • Synthetic or wool long underwear bottom and top (no cotton - cotton does not wick moisture or insulate when wet)
    • Mid layer top and bottom
    • Synthetic or wool socks (no cotton)
    • Winter jacket
    • Insulated “Puffy” Jacket
    • Snow/Shell pants (shell pants preferable)
    • Warm gloves or mittens
    • Hat and neck gaiter or balaclava
    • Goggles or sunglasses
    • Small day pack
    • Water bottle
    • Lip balm
    • Sunscreen
