This off-trail hike to the summit of Boreas Mountain from Boreas Pass is an adventure through Colorado's high country, where the journey begins with a gradual ascent across willows and alpine tundra. As we progress, the terrain becomes more rugged, and any hint of a trail eventually disappears, leaving us to rely on route-finding skills. The approach to the summit involves navigating a challenging "dinner plate" talus field, where careful footwork is essential to safely traverse the loose rocks. This climb rewards hikers with breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Continental Divide and the surrounding peaks, offering a true sense of accomplishment and solitude in the backcountry. If we find a bit more energy, we may explore the ridge north of Boreas Mountain. We'll find a comfortable spot for lunch/snack before returning to the trailhead via the same route. Our pace will be consistent with completing this trip in a reasonable amount of time. Overall ~4 miles and 1600 ft elevation gain. (Boreas Mountain - CalTopo)
