Ascending Hikes - Seasonal Fitness – Golden Gate Canyon State Park - Ralston Roost Trailhead Loop

This will be a loop hike starting with the Black Bear Trail then through Frazer Meadows and back to the cars via Horseshoe Trail. Prior to the hike review the 2026 Members Guide to Ascending Hikes and bring a goal you want to address.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 5.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,343 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 9,327 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph average

This is the first of several Ascending Hikes I will do over the next 6 weeks. We will work on finding and maintaining a pace we can keep for a long period of time and in the process improve our endurance. The hikes will gradually become longer with more elevation gain and start at higher and higher elevations. We will not sacrifice enjoying ourselves and the group will stay together for the duration of the hike.

Meet at the dirt lot at the intersection of Highway 93 and Golden Gate Canyon Road across from the Golden Assisted Living facility at 7:30 for 7:45 departure.
