Ascending Hikes - Seasonal Fitness – Niwot Mountain Loop Route

This classic, Niwot Mountain custom loop (11.3 miles, +-2,179 ft.) hits the best of the Indian Peaks subalpine forests before climbing into the raw alpine tundra of the high country to visit the summit of Niwot Mountain (11,471 ft.). It avoids the tough parking logistics of the inner trailheads by utilizing the winter lot, making it an excellent option for an immersive day in the backcountry of Colorado.

Hike Overview

    • Total Distance: 11.3 miles

    • Elevation Change: +-2,179 ft.

    • Starting Point: Gateway Trailhead (Winter Parking Lot)

The Ascent: Forest to Alpine Waters

Your trek begins at the Gateway Trailhead, heading into dense lodgepole pine and spruce-fir forests along the rolling Sourdough Trail. You’ll quickly transition onto the South St. Vrain Trail, following the gentle rush of the creek as the grade begins to steady. After linking up with the Long Lake Trailhead Trail, the trees begin to thin, opening up to the stunning, glacier-carved waters of Long Lake. This is an ideal spot to check the weather before making your push above the tree line.

The Ridge and Summit

From Long Lake, you'll pick up the Niwot Ridge Trail, where the real climbing begins. As you leave the krummholz (stunted, wind-twisted trees) behind, you step onto the vast, fragile alpine tundra. The trail brings you directly to the 11,471-foot summit of Niwot Mountain, offering panoramic, unobstructed views of the Continental Divide and the rugged peaks framing the valley below.

The Descent Loop

After soaking in the summit views, you'll begin your descent via the Left Hand Reservoir Road. This gravel path provides a steady, wide footing down through the upper basin. To close the loop and stay off the main vehicle roads, you'll dive back into the timber via the Little Raven Trail, a peaceful stretch that eventually reconnects with the Sourdough Trail for the final, familiar miles back to the Gateway Trailhead.
