Trip
Backcountry Nordic Skiing – Pavilion Point via Argentine Central Railroad Grade
We will ski to the first switchback which will take about 1 hour 15 minutes with frequent rest and clothing breaks. If new snow (unlikely) we will try to proceed single file so as to provide a good ski track to practice your kick-glide technique on the way back down. it will take about 35-40 minutes back to the cars. Skins are not needed, but herringbone skis with metal edges work best.

Meet at 9:00 AM at Woolly Mammoth Park & Ride, Pole MM. We will stop at the Georgetown Visitors Center for a "nature " stop.
The trailhead is very near the I-70 exit for Silver Plume. Exit and turn left and then an almost immediate right. Follow the snow-covered road a short distance and park at the dead end on the south side of the road facing the way you drove in. There is room for maybe three cars but there is a larger space a few yards down the road. If the road is blocked (i.e. not plowed) there is ample parking at the Loop RR parking lot, although adding to the trip distance.
The round trip car distance is about 70 miles.
Required Equipment
I recommend applying a "glide" wax to your ski bottoms in front of and behind the herringbone scales area using a flat cork to smooth out the wax. A hard wax like a green hardness seems to work best.
When we reach the first switchback (our destination) we will stop for water and a snack, maybe spending 1/2 hour there. So, pack some sort of sitting pad if choosing to sit down in the snow. Plan to fill your water bottle(s) with hot water or cocoa before leaving home.
The trail is totally shaded so sunglasses or ski goggles are usually not needed.
