Intermediate backcountry tour in the Berthoud Pass area. We are planning for a mellow morning of ski touring - the route may change based on conditions, and will be communicated several days prior to the trip, with additional pre-trip information.
Primary plan: Second Creek to Broome Hut. If we’re unable to find parking at Second Creek, we will go to the main parking area on the summit of the pass, and further consolidate cars there, or go to the backup plan.
Backup Plan: The Meadows. TH is the main parking area on the summit of the pass, touring on the West side of the pass.
Meet time will be 7:15am and we will be aiming to return to the trailhead by around 1:00pm.
This is a good opportunity for folks who have taken AIARE 1 or Avalanche Rescue this season to get out in the field and build more experience.

We may be skiing variable snow conditions (crust, powder, refrozen snow, etc.), so be comfortable skiing in these conditions.
This will be a Leader-In-Training (LIT) trip for Andrew Walz.
We will meet at 7:15 at the Second Creek parking lot and tour up to Broome Hut just after sunrise. We can do several laps behind the hut, using the hut as a "home base" for breaks, etc. Leaders are aware that there is a splitboard festival on the pass this day, hence the reason for an early start.
Optional carpool leaving from Wooly Mammoth at 6:15 in order to minimize number of cars we’re parking on the pass.
Required Equipment
Backcountry skis or split board, poles & skins. Avalanche safety gear, including 3-antenna transceiver, shovel and probe. Outdoor clothing appropriate for the season & conditions, including extra warm layers. Food, water and 10 Essentials.
