Bobcats trip – Mayflower Gulch Trailhead

Abandoned Sites Hike: This EXPLORATORY HIKE visits the historic Boston Mine site in the upper reaches of Mayflower Gulch, following a scenic route through broad alpine meadows framed by the dramatic peaks of the Tenmile Range. As we gain elevation, remnants of the once-bustling mining operation come into view, offering a glimpse into the area's rich mining heritage and the challenges faced by early prospectors in this high-altitude environment. The combination of outstanding mountain scenery, historical exploration, and moderate off-trail travel makes this a rewarding outing for hikers interested in both Colorado history and alpine landscapes.

This EXPLORATORY HIKE hike ventures deep into Mayflower Gulch to investigate the historic Boston Mine complex, one of the most significant mining sites in the area. Beginning on the well-established Mayflower Gulch Trail, we will travel through expansive alpine meadows and past the remains of old mining infrastructure as we ascend toward the upper basin beneath the towering peaks of the Tenmile Range. At the Boston Mine site, we will explore the remaining structures, mine workings, and scattered artifacts that tell the story of the area's late-19th-century silver mining boom. From the mine, we will continue higher to the broad crest of Gold Hill Ridge, reaching elevations of approximately 12,000 feet. The ridge provides exceptional 360-degree views encompassing Pacific Peak, Atlantic Peak, Fletcher Mountain, Drift Peak, Crystal Peak, and the surrounding basins and valleys. Combining Colorado mining history, alpine scenery, route-finding, and a rewarding high-elevation viewpoint, this exploratory hike offers a unique opportunity to experience both the natural and historical character of Mayflower Gulch. We'll find a comfortable spot for lunch/snack. Our pace will be consistent with completing this hike in a reasonable amount of time. Overall ~7 miles and ~1800 ft elevation gain.
