Fly Fishing – Urad Lake State Wildlife Area
Let’s see some fall colors and try to catch a Tiger Trout (Brown x Brook hybrid). Colorado Parks and Wildlife heavily stocks Urad with catchable rainbows, tiger trout and grayling were stocked in 2022. Brook trout and cutthroat can be caught in the Woods Creek inlet. This is reservoir (lake) fishing with some trees on south side to challenge your back cast.

Required Equipment
Recommended equipment: 5 - 6 wt. fly rods with floating lines, but if you prefer some streamer action for the tiger trout, suggest you bring a sink tip line.
Bring waders if you like to wade out and get some extra space for a back cast or to wade Woods Creek Inlet.
Flies: Parachute Adams, Blue Wing Olives, Black parachute flies, black wooly buggers. Last year's trip the rainbow warrior was the best fly.
*Bring smaller size flies, the fish are typically 8-12 inches.
Practice Leave No Trace!
Bring the 10 essentials, lunch, water (or water filter) and plan for a full day in the field.
NOTE: There are no bathroom facilities so please plan accordingly for restroom and sanitation needs.
The walk from the parking area to the lake is a steep walk of about 0.25 mile on a closed dirt road.
