Bison Peak

Trip

Hiking – Bison Peak via Ute Creek Trail

A challenging hike to a unique summit in the Lost Creek Wilderness. Bison Peak sits at 12,432 feet. Based on reports from another CMC trip leader, this route is relatively snow free as of late April 2025. Depending on weather, Bison Peak should offer excellent views of the Collegiate Peaks, Pikes Peak, and the Mosquito Range. There will be some light scrambling never above class 2 to reach the summit.

  • High Point Elevation: 12,432 ft

Please be aware of your own fitness levels when signing up for this hike. I intend to move relatively quickly, and there is 3,700 feet of total elevation gain. This is NOT an easy hike.

Please be considerate of others who are devoting one of their precious summer Saturdays to this hike by coming prepared from a fitness, nutrition, and gear perspective.  Some class 2 and below scrambling will be needed to reach the summit.  If you aren't comfortable with this, please do not sign up for this hike.  This is a CMC hike, which means if one person needs to turn around, we all turn around.

If you have any health issues that may impact the hike, please advise me in advance (i.e. not the morning of).

I plan to lead a number of tougher 13er and 14er hikes and scrambles later this summer. If you think you might like to join those, and I haven't hiked with you on a challenging hike before, please sign up for one of my early season hikes like this one so I have confidence in your ability to successfully complete those later hikes.

I will be coming from Summit County.  I will meet the group at the Ute Creek Trailhead at 0700: https://maps.app.goo.gl/88ojQnnqLb4RyGnR8

For people coming from Denver, I'd suggest a carpool meeting location of Twin Forks PNR at 0530 for a 0540 departure: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jDgHmDMYyYzS3tko6

For people coming from Colorado Springs, I'd suggest a carpool meeting location of the Safeway in Old Colorado City at 0535 for a 0545 departure: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MsV7ofhcwUTDWNqN9

If you prefer to camp nearby the night before and meet us at the trailhead, no problem, just please let me know in advance.

If you intend to carpool, please let me know from which location, and if you'd be willing to be my carpool wrangler for that location.
