The near 4 hour out and back hike to/from the summit of Geneva Mountain begins on an old mining road that eventually fades out with the remainder of the hike off trail mostly on tundra. The entirety of the hike is above tree line. Hence, we must start the hike early and be very cognizant of approaching thunderstorms. The weather forecast as of Sunday, August 10th calls for likely thunderstorms after 12pm with temperatures between 50-60 degrees with wind of 8-9 mph with 15-16 mph gusts. As such we will endeavor to summit but need be will turn around sooner to return to the cars. The hike starts and ends at the trailhead. Registration preference will be given to El Pueblo and Pikes Peak group members with recent hiking experience at higher elevation. If i have not had the pleasure of hiking with you before, please email me before Thursday, August 14th at 6 pm to determine if there are any medical conditions you have that I should be aware of and to get a feel for your level of fitness by learning about the mileage, gain, and high point of hikes you have completed in the last two months.
Due to a new law that recently went into effect, it is illegal to park on the side of the road on Guanella Pass Road. Hopefully, there will be parking available in the Bierstadt Trailhead parking lot. If not, we will park in the nearby Square Top lakes parking lot. We will start early and endeavor to carpool due to very limited parking even on a Friday.
Pueblo participants will meet at 5am at a TBD location. Colorado Springs participants will meet at the Walmart Supercenter in Woodland Park for a prompt 6am departure.
Required Equipment
Wear layers with bringing wind-rain gear, sun protection, sturdy boots with good traction and ankle support. Bring trekking poles due to uneven hiking surfaces especially on the tundra, 2-3 liters of water, snacks to eat on the trail, a lunch that weather permitting will be eaten of the summit, and the other 10 essentials. Depending on the interest of the group, we can stop at a restaurant somewhere off of highway 285 on the return trip to Woodland Park.
