Hiking – Horseshoe Mountain - Horseshoe and Peerless Mountain

Climb Horseshoe (13,898) Mountain and potentially Peerless Mountain (13.348) near Fairplay. The priority will be Horseshoe, and we will decide as a group whether to add the short climb to Peerless. The route is approximately 7 ½ mi and 2260’ gain if both peaks are completed.

The trailhead is at 39.19818, -106.15791, on Forest Road 603, which is a left turn of CR18 (Fourmile Creek Rd.) a little less than a mile west of the Leavick site.  High clearance/AWD may be required for the last ½ mile or so to the TH.

The priority will be Horseshoe, and we will decide based on weather conditions and other variables whether to add the ½ mile / 160 foot climb to Peerless.

Leader permission is required for this challenging hike.  Please let me know distance and elevation gain of recent hikes you have completed of similar difficulty.  Please reply by text or email by Thursday, September 11th at 5 pm.

Pueblo participants will meet at 6:00 am at the intersection South McCulloch Blvd West and Highway 50 in Pueblo West (38°20'31.6"N 104°46'10.6"W).  Colorado Springs participants will meet the at the dirt lot just east of the Badger Basin Country Store / gas station in Hartsel at 7 am (39.021362691378194, -105.79709606596086, see Google maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/aGjJc8XdLghmpUhL7).  Participants from Denver or other locations: please contact me by text (719 744 7840) to arrange a meeting place.

Bring snacks, lunch and 2 liters of water, in addition to the other 10 essentials. There is potential for both winter weather and thunderstorms so please bring hiking poles, sturdy boots, appropriate foul weather gear (includes hat & gloves) and sun protection.
