Hiking – Medicine Bow Peak - Wyoming

Medicine Bow Peak at 12,018 feet is the highest peak in the Medicine Bow Range. From the summit it includes spectacular 360 degree views. This is one of the finest alpine hikes in the Snowy Range.

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 8.8 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,217 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 12,018 ft
  • Pace: moderate

The hike will begin at the Lewis Lake TH. We will hike west about 1 mile (345ft) to the saddle between Sugarloaf Mountain & Medicine Bow Peak (MBP). This next 0.85 mile (1,000ft) will probably be the most difficult part of the hike. From the saddle to MBP, the route becomes rockier with some class 2 and possibly easy class 3 scrambling over quartzite boulders. The final approach traverses a broad alpine ridge with increasingly dramatic views in every direction prior to reaching the summit of Medicine Bow Peak at 12,018 feet. The hike will continue along the Medicine Bow Peak Trail for another 3.7 miles and descend to Lake Marie and Mirror Lake. Wildflowers can be abundant in July and early August. At Mirror Lake we will hike the Lakes Trail 1.8 miles (574ft). The terrain is much gentler. This may be the most scenic part of the loop. The trail meanders through alpine meadows and passes several lakes beneath the cliffs of Medicine Bow Peak back to the junction between MBP and Sugarloaf Mountain. Continue the final 0.9 miles back to the Lewis Lake TH.

This route gets the difficult part done early so we may then enjoy the rest of hike and all it has to offer.

This is a NOCO CMC lead trip. So NOCO CMC members will be given first chance to sign up for this trip through July 1. Non NOCO CMC members will be waitlisted until July 1. After July 1 the trip will be open to all qualified members.

We will meet on the NW corner of the King Soopers parking lot on N. College Avenue. Meeting time will be 5:50am and we will leave promptly at 6am. Ride share will be $15 per person paid to the drivers.

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

Required equipment will be your 10 Essentials. We may encounter some weather so I would recommend rain jacket and other clothing to keep you comfortable in changing weather. Trekking poles, scrambling gloves may come in handy. Also most of this hike is at or above treeline, so sunscreen and protection is advisable.  And of  course don't forget you lunch, snacks and water.
