The goal would be to summit Mount Princeton, hikers must be able to to keep a moderate pace (1.5 - 2mph - obviously much slower for the final ascent.)
IMPORTANT - Trip starting point: I would prefer to start at the Radio Towers, but would need 3 willing drivers with reliable 4WD vehicles to carpool us up to the towers. Reports say that a jeep/4runner-type 4WD can “easily” make it to the Towers. (no trucks - the corners are very tight).
If we can start from the Towers, the hike will be about 7.2miles, 3,320 ft elevation gain. If we do not have 4WD carpool volunteers, we will start from the 2WD parking lot, which will make the hike a 13.25mile distance with 5,400ft elevation gain.
This hike will include class 2 scramble and is notorious for all the talus, scree, rocks and boulders you need to navigate. If you do not have good balance, and playing in a rock garden all day long is not your idea of a fun day, you might want to sit this one out. (Many peak baggers say this is their least favorite 14er for that reason)
This hike is not for beginners.
Meet at the 2WD Trailhead at 5am. Google Map link to TH: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mkfv3YuhswpyY5p97. TH Address: 22150 Co Rd 322, Buena Vista, CO 81211
If we have 2 willing drivers with reliable 4WD vehicles will will carpool from here to the Radio Towers. If not, we’ll start hiking from the 2WD parking lot.
No organized carpool by the trip leader, (leader will be staying near the trailhead). If anyone else wants to coordinate carpool from Denver, please let the leader know.
Required Equipment
Good hiking shoes, poles & mircospikes might be needed, will know closer to the date. Bring plenty snacks and water, enough for the whole day. Bring layers, plan on it being windy and cold at the summit. And as always, the 10 essentials.
