  • Mileage: 5.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,555 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 13,013 ft
  • Pace: moderate 1.5-2.0 mph

Although the Class 1 hike is a short distance of 5 miles, the ascent is moderately challenging due to the starting elevation of 11,630', 1500' gain of the whole trip realized in the 2.5 mile ascent to the final summit, and having to lose elevation coming off a false summit and then regain it before the final climb to the true summit. Summiting Pennsylvania Mountain is well worth it as historical remains of mining operations can be seen enroute and an incredible 360 degree view from the summit that includes familiar mountains such as Lincoln and Bross, Grays and Torreys, Bierstadt, and Silverheels.

This is a "leader permission required" hike. Please email me by Thursday, August 22nd at 6pm if you would like to join the group on the hike. If I have not had the pleasure of hiking with you before, I would like to know what hikes you have done within the last 2 months that would prepare you for summiting a 13er.  Preference for registration will be given to Pueblo and Colorado Springs group CMC members. I will email everyone registered for the hike on Friday, August 23rd with details of the hike including weather information.

Pueblo participants meet at the Southeast corner of Albertson's Parking lot at 1601 Hwy 50, Pueblo, 81008 for a 5:00am departure; Colorado Springs hikers meet at a dirt parking lot west of Highline Cafe and Saloon (restaurant address 12779 US-24) in Hartsell, 80449 at 6:40am; or meet at the Pennsylvania Mountain Trailhead at 7:15am for a 7:30am hike departure. Google Pennsylvania Mountain Trailhead & don't be confused by the address saying Mountain View Drive in Fairplay, CO. As always the hike starts at the trailhead.

The dirt road to Pennsylvania Mountain Trailhead is accessible by 2WD. After leaving Alma the route to the trailhead will wind through several roads in a subdivision before dead ending on Mountain View Drive where a dirt parking lot and the start of a single track trail can be found. Make sure you use Google maps and screen shot the directions to follow in the event you have no cell signal.
