Hiking – Reynolds Park

DOGGIE HIKE: Dogs welcome, but not required. We will hike the Elkhorn-Eagles View Loop. Lots of beautiful views. Please answer the question about whether you are bringing a dog as Jeff Co allows only "12 heartbeats" under the CMC permit.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 990 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 8,200 ft
  • Pace: slow doggie casual (about 1.25-1.8 mph)

This is a moderate hike that we will be taking at a slow pace. When I scouted it on April 22 the trail was dry and well maintained.  We will make the loop (Fox Trot-Elkhorn-Oxen Draw-Eagles View-Ravens Roost-Fox Trot) going clockwise, which makes the ascent a bit easier.  There are rocky sections throughout the trail, and the rocks can be slippery on the descent, so poles are helpful. While my dog and I averaged 1.8mph over the whole hike, we were definitely slower on the ascent.

We will stop for lunch/snack out of the wind, a little past the top.

This trail wanders through forest and open spaces and was very windy at the top, so come prepared with sun protection and layers.

If bringing a dog, please be aware that Jeff Co rules require that they need to be leashed at all times; please use 6 ft lead - no extension leashes allowed due to dangers of tripping other hikers. Please read Denver CMC rules for Dog Hikes

Two options for meeting:

Meet at 8:15 to form carpools for 8:30 departure from Morrison Park N Ride across from Phillips 66 (16283 Morrison Road)-NOTE: due to rising gas prices, plan on $20 per car to be split between the driver and passengers.

Meet at 9:00 at trailhead-285 South towards Fairplay 15 miles, right then left onto Kennedy Gulch Rd; .2 miles make left on S Foxton; the trailhead is 5 miles ahead on right.

Please let me know if you are planning to meet us at the trailhead (mapanarelli@gmail.com or 703-774-6266).

There is a vault toilet at the trailhead, but no easily accessible bathroom at the Park N Ride. Carpools may elect to stop on the way.
