Hiking – St Mary's Glacier

We will take the trail to St Mary's Glacier (snow field) then assess the snow conditions and if we are prepared to hike to the top of the snow field. The snow will be slushy and may require microspikes to be safe so for safety, I'm requiring microspikes. Weather will also be a factor in where we hike. Storms are predicted for the afternoon.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 5.6 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 11,200 ft
  • Pace: 2.0

There are no technical skills required but the glacier will present new walking skills and require balance not typical of a normal trail. If and when you fall, the snow will be very wet and will quickly soak your clothes if you do not have water proof clothes (rain pants and jacket). I would recommend you have hiking poles. Also water proof your boots. In short, think about hiking on a steep snowy slope in warm temperatures. Be smart.

Wooley Mammoth Park and Ride at 6:45 AM. We will leave by 7:00 AM. I will check at this point if you have microspikes. The trip is 60 mi round trip. Per car $18 for the ride and parking at St. Mary's is $20 per car. That is a total of $38 per car divided by the number of riders. (example $38/ 4 passengers = $9.5 per passenger.

Required Equipment

Required equipment starts with 10 Essentials. Microspikes are required for climbing the glacier. Weather prediction is for rain so bring appropriate clothes (rain pants and jacket) Sunscreen or sun block, a hat and sunglasses. The snow will blind you then fry you! As part of your 10 Essentials bring water, food and layer your clothes. It will be cool to start the hike but the route is relatively steep. I would recommend that you have hiking poles.
