This is a challenging hike at the West side of Staunton State Park. We'll hike up to Lion’s Head and have lunch on the Elk Falls Overlook. The final part of the Lion's Head loop is currently closed for raptor nesting but maybe we'll spot some of them.  Start at the Lazy V Ranch parking lot (the new lot – with Restrooms) then hike up Scout Line to Marmot Passage, descend to Elk Falls Pond, go along Elk Creek, head uphill towards Chimney Rock, and continue up to Lion’s Back and Elk Falls Overlook. After enjoying the view, we’ll take an easier return route on Bugling Elk and Staunton Ranch trails.

Hikers should be comfortable hiking on rocky terrain with occasional steep drop offs. Pace will average 2.0mph. Bring spikes and poles (I will advise about snowshoes nearer the time). Dress in layers and bring plenty of food to keep you warm.

Meet at The Fort restaurant (Colorado Hwy 8 at US 285) in time for 7:45am departure. A Colorado State Parks pass is required for each vehicle.

Please call/text me if you are going to be late at 301-518 5990
