Navigation – NCAR Trailhead
NAVIGATION FOR BEGINNERS SESSION 1 Boulder Group Basic Navigation course: introduction to using navigation apps, map reading, and offline use in session 1, with an introduction to traditional map and compass skills in session 2. You can sign up for session 1, session 2, or both. Session 1: Digital Navigation Basics (April 25, 9am-12 pm, NCAR) Hands-on exploration of CalTopo, Gaia, and OnX, focusing on downloading maps, creating routes, and using offline mode. We will demonstrate how to interpret contour lines, map layers, and terrain shading within each app, practice marking waypoints and measuring distances, and sync routes between devices. Session 2 (May 9, 9 am to 12 pm, NCAR): Introduction to topographic maps/compass and the benefits of combining digital apps with traditional map/compass. We will practice orienting a map to north, finding a bearing, and triangulating position with landmarks. Please bring your phone and preferred trip planning apps/tech as well as a compass and some layers, as we'll be pausing for instruction and practice pretty frequently. Paper topo maps will be provided.
