RMOTHG Trip – Square Top Mtn

This 7 mile / 2400' elevation gain – and all-above-treeline - climb has been described as "amazing, but you have to earn it." The first 1.5 miles from Guanella Pass up to Lower Square Top Lake is easy, but then it's a steep, rocky 1500 feet of elevation in one mile. Highlights include pristine lakes, wildflowers, and majestic 360 degree views. Estimated time to complete – at a steady, moderate pace – is 5 hours.

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 7.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,400 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 13,794 ft
  • Pace: Moderate / Steady / Minimal Stops

Please assess your current aerobic / physical conditioning for spending approx. 5 hours hiking steep, rocky terrain at high altitude while gaining 2400 feet of elevation. We'll be maintaining a steady moderate pace with minimal stops. Due to the increased lightning danger of high peak climbs, the ability to move quickly is essential – for both your safety and the safety of the group.

A good rule of thumb when considering what to pack (especially for hiking above treeline): Bring what you would need to stay warm & dry if you sprained your ankle or twisted your knee up on the mountain above treeline in a cold rain or hail storm and wouldn't be able to get down for several hours.
