Rock Climb – Staunton State Park

After work rock climb oriented toward beginner climbers

  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 0.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 240 ft

This climb will be oriented toward beginner climbers. There will be top ropes available to climb for those with minimal experience. Priority will be given to recent graduates of the Basic Rock class offered by the Denver group. Other climbers encouraged to join include those who have experience climbing at the gym but have never climbed outdoors.

Climbs at this crag range from 5.4-5.8.

The routes are short and well-suited for those new to outdoor climbs and new to leading outdoors.

It is expected you know the following skills (completion of Basic Rock will satisfy the below requirements):

  • How to put on a climbing harness (properly tightened, no twists, buckles double-backed)
  • Ability to tie a figure-8 retrace for tying in to the rope
  • Proper use of a belay device (GriGri or ATC)
  • Knowledge of how to close the system (stopper knots)
  • Strict adherence to PBUS belay technique
  • Proper use of climbing commands
  • Conduct a full harness-to-harness partner safety check - every time

Minimum equipment to participate in this trip:

  • Climbing harness
  • Climbing helmet
  • Climbing shoes or approach shoes
  • Belay device with locking carabiner - a GriGri is highly preferred to an ATC

ATCs will only be allowed if the climber provides explicit permission for its use and expresses comfort with the belayer and their technique

For lead climbing:

  • If you are gym certified to lead, you may lead belay only
  • If you have completed the CMC’s Gym to Crag course (or equivalent experience), you may lead belay and lead climb
  • In order to lead climb, in addition to proper belay and clipping technique, the expectation is you know how to safely clean top rope anchors for a route in all the following scenarios
    • Through mussy hooks
    • Through wide chains/rings, passing a bight through
    • Through small chains in which you must untie before passing the rope through
  • You may set a top rope anchor if you first present it to the trip leader for inspection prior to leaving the ground
  • No skipping bolts

If you are sport climbing, please bring your own quick draws (10-12 will suffice for this crag). Consider bringing your own rope - we will decide how many ropes are needed when we meet at the parking lot. A 60m rope is sufficient for these routes.

We will meet at the Lazy V Parking lot at Staunton State Park:

Meet at 4:00pm. You may come later and meet us at the crag - please text the trip leader the day before the climb if you are arriving later.

Please note a State Park pass (with vehicle registration or $10 at the entrance) is needed to enter the park.

After a short safety briefing and gear inventory, we will hike to the crag together. King’s Landing is about a 5 minute uphill hike from the parking lot.

We will climb until sunset or we are satisfied with the climbing.
