The Wilderness First Responder course is engaging, hands-on, and instructed to the latest evidence-based practices in wilderness medicine. Instructors are wilderness medicine professionals and skilled outdoor educators with years of experience working remote, complex rescues and guiding groups in dynamic environments. All courses are nationally recognized and have reciprocity among other wilderness medicine education companies.
Registration will close Sept 8, 2026. A minimum of 8 students will be required to run the course. Full refunds will be processed if the course has to be canceled due to low registration. Cancelations made on the participants behalf, one month or less prior to the course start date will be charged a $150 cancelation fee.
Location: Colorado Mountain Club & Betasso Preserve
Time: 8am - 5pm with a one-hour lunch break, The second Saturday will be from 12pm - 9pm
Course Schedule:
- 40-hour Pre-course Online self-paced learning. Students will be emailed and gain access to all materials one week prior to the first field session. See the Course Materials Tab for more information.
- Unlike many programs, our WFR is spread out over two three-day weekends. You can expect our in-person field days to follow the following schedule:
- Week 1: Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 9am-6pm
- Week 2: Friday & Sunday from 9am-6pm, Saturday from 12noon-9pm
- Field days will be held at one of two locations. Additional details and carpool set up will be sent out in an email one week prior to the course:

- There are no prerequisites. This class is only open to students 18 years and over. This class satisfies the requirements for CMC trip leaders.
- The email address you use when registering will be the email used for all course related resources.
The CMC offers Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder classes through Backcountry Pulse. All Backcountry Pulse programs are taught to the current internationally accepted wilderness medicine guidelines and are continually updated to reflect the latest evidence-based practices. All courses are globally recognized.
Volunteers are needed for Saturday field day session. Any interested volunteers can fill out the interest form. Confirmation will be sent out two weeks ahead of the course date.

- The textbook will be provided as a PDF and made available after registration in the "Course Materials" tab of the Registration Page.
Packing List:
- Notebook and pen
- Print a copy of the PowerPoints if you would like a visual aid to follow along during the field day lesson
- Personal hand sanitizer
- Watch (or cell phone with timer)
- Day pack packed with the gear you primarily recreate with (This could be trail running, climbing gear, ski equipment, etc. We want you to practice improvising with the equipment you already own.)
- Closed-toe shoes (i.e. hiking boots or trail runners)
- Clothing that allows you to be comfortable in a variety of weather conditions
- Water, snacks & lunch (or money to buy lunch)
- Camp chair or pad
- Sleeping pad (so you don't have to lay directly on grass for the scenarios)
- Clipboard or hard surface to write on
