Intro to Hiking Safety

An introductory seminar to the hiking safety basics.

Registration is required prior to this seminar by credit card. If you are a non member, please set up a free guest membership first (linked here). 

Meet at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street Golden, CO 80401

From 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 

Topics include:

  • Safety concerns: mountain weather, lightning, avalanche, animal encounters, getting lost (or staying found), cold weather gear, staying warm, hypothermia, and being stranded overnight. 
  • Tools: how to prepare, what you need in your pack, how to respond to safety challenges, trip planning, 10 Essentials to carry in your pack. 
  • Basic Navigation: how to stay found.
  • Clothing: layering, materials, rain gear, sun protection, trail nutrition and hydration.
  • Trail Sense: registers, noting location, reading trail markers, trail etiquette, and obtaining Search and Rescue support.
