Snowshoe hike to Black Lake out and back.

  • Fri, Mar 20, 2026
  • Northern Colorado
  • Snowshoeing
  • Adults
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,600 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 10,611 ft
  • Pace: 1.3 mph

This is a relatively long hike with snowshoes so please be ready for a longer hike by bringing a little extra food, water and clothing.  Weather conditions are unpredictable so be prepared for sun, warm, cold and wind all in the same day.

We will plan to use the Glacier Gorge TH, hike to Mills Lake and then continue on to Black Lake and return on the same route.

We will plan to meet at JJ's gas station, intersection of Harmony Rd. and Taft Hill in Fort Collins.  Plan to arrive at 7:00 am and we will depart the parking lot no later than 7:15 am.  If we have participants from Loveland joining the trip, we will have a brief stop at Jax in Loveland at the intersection of Hwy. 34 and Eisenhower; to pick up these people and then head west on Hwy 34 to Estes Park.  I plan to stop in Estes Park at the visitor Center to gear up and put on warm boots there, the bathroom is usually open so we can have a brief TH meeting there and then drive into the park and on to the Glacier Gorge Parking Lot.  If GG lot is full we will have to continue on and park at the Bear Lake lot.

Required Equipment

For gear requirements as always bring the 10-essentials.  Snowshoes and micro spikes should be in your gear.  I would suggest 2-liters of water.  Warm clothing in several lavers so you can adjust to changing temperatures, a hard shell for wind and possible snow protection.  Warm gloves or mittens as well as a lighter pair of gloves.  Trekking poles with snow baskets.
