Special Interest Sections

Do you have a special interest you would like to pursue with the Colorado Mountain Club? Explore more by joining an additional special interest section such as Backpacking (BPX), Mountain Biking, Colorado High Peaks, Fly Fishing, Photography, Trailblazers or Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang.

ASCENDING HIKES Section (AHS):

AHS helps members improve on their personal hiking speed, strength, and stamina.  AHS-labeled trips are offered mid-May through September, usually on Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sundays.  Members are encouraged to choose hikes based on their own on-going self-assessment.  No ongoing commitment required. A typical member chooses comfortable hikes to start and then gradually progresses in trip length, maximum elevation, and difficulty.  If you are consistent, you will be ready to tackle major new challenges by the end of summer.  Open to all CMC members (not guests), free.

Backpacking Section (BPX):

The purpose of BPX is to promote backpacking as a core CMC activity, organize and coordinate backpacking trips, create and support a community of backpackers, and provide early notice of BPX events to members.

Bobcats Section:

The Bobcats’ mission is to ensure a variety of challenging CMC trips, mostly on weekdays, all year long, for our mostly age 50+ constituents. We don’t have dues or elections and we invite all CMC members to sign up for any Bobcats trip. A monthly email is sent to all Bobcats members with the upcoming month’s trips, just after those trips are activated.

Colorado High Peaks Section:

Interested in 14ers? Or 13ers? Join the Colorado High Peaks Section!

Fly Fishing Section:

The Fly Fishing Section promotes the aquatic habitat of the Colorado Rockies. We meet monthly on the third Thursday at 7:00 pm from March through September. Our meetings feature guest speakers on topics such as entomology and local hot spots. The general public is welcome. We also conduct seminars and clinics on topics like casting, fly tying, nymphing, and drag free drift. Service projects for stream sampling, stream cleanup, hosting wounded warriors, and trail work are also supported. We lead fly fishing trips in Colorado and adjoining states. Introductory Fly Fishing School and Fly Tying School are held annually for our members.

Mountain Biking Section:

Love to mountain bike? Want to learn? Join the Mountain Biking Section!

Photo Section:

The Denver CMC Photography Section is open to all ages and skill levels. We conduct photography hikes and multi-day trips that get you into great places with photographic opportunities together with other folks interested in photography. We also hold monthly meetings with talks by experts and tips and informational seminars by Club members as well as slideshows and discussion of section members' work. A yearly school for beginners and intermediate photographers rounds out the activities. Come and meet us at 7:00 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at the AMC.

Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang:

Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang is a group of hikers/bikers/skiers and, most importantly, friends over 50. In other words, a bunch of folks “of a certain age” (definitely NOT old) who love to get out and do and prove we don’t have any feet in the grave yet! In addition, food ranks high on our priority list so most activities include eating one way or another. In the past we have sponsored everything from ethnic dinners to raft trips, to castle visits, as well as our outdoor activities.

Trailblazers:

From after-work hikes in Golden to Saturday 14er climbs to week-long excursions to Moab, this group gets 20- and 30-something adventurers together nearly every week. There are also regular happy hours and social events.

Trail Running Section:

Trail Running is like a faster “lightweight” hiking trip with some important distinctions like magnitude of distance, injuries, and keeping groups together. The Trail Running section is a new statewide section for beginner, intermediate, and more advanced runners interested in coordinated group runs, training seminars, and a community of runners like yourself within CMC.
