Ascending Hikes - Endurance – Staunton State Park

This Ascending Series Hike will be at Staunton State Park, hiking the Mason Creek Trail up to the Catamount Scenic Overlook, 6.5 miles with 1175 feet of elevation gain.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,175 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 9,450 ft
  • Pace: 1.75 - 1.9 mph

This is the 2nd hike in my planned ascending hike series.  It is slightly more challenging than my first hike - by about 1 mile in distance and 300 feet in elevation gain.

Our chosen trail is the Mason Creek trail going to the Catamount Overlook in the southeast portion of the park.  We’ll hike approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1175 feet.  We will hopefully have some decent views at the overlook.

Our pace will accommodate everyone’s capability and will target the moderate pace of approximately 1.75 – 1.90 mph.

A map of our trail can be obtained at https://caltopo.com/m/9K7D308

We’ll meet on Monday April 6th at the RTD Park and Ride at Hampton and Wadsworth at 7:15 AM for a 7:30 AM departure.  The map at this link -->  Map shows both the meet-up location for carpooling and the trailhead parking at Staunton State Park.

The driving distance is 26 miles one way, taking about 35 minutes.  We’ll stop at the Maverick Gas Station & Convenience Store in Conifer for a brief rest stop on the way to the trailhead.  The location of this Maverick Store is also shown on the map referenced above.

The driver reimbursement is calculated as follows:  26 miles one way, 52 miles total distance x $0.3 per mile = approximately $16 to be divided equally among everyone in the car including the driver.
