Ascending Hikes - Skill Building – Herman Gulch Trail

This is a Skill-Builder Ascending Hike open to ALL CMC members WITH PREFERENCE for those for whom these PLACES are new: Herman Gulch and the Continental Divide Trail. Bonus: test your ability to hike from 10,400' to 12,000.' If these places are NOT NEW for you, please wait to register until Thursday, July 23, at 6:30pm.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 9.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 12,020 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 - 2.2

We will hike out from the Herman Gulch TH up the combined Continental Divide Trail/Herman Gulch Trail to Herman Lake and back.  We'll make about a mile detour on the way up from where the CDT splits off lake trail just to experience the view.

We will keep up a consistent but moderate pace with minimal stops while experiencing a higher elevation than some may have experienced before, but keeping in mind the symptoms of altitude sickness.  So, in sum:

--- See Herman Gulch, a famous place along the Continental Divide with an elevation of about 10-12,000+.’

--- Hike part of the Continental Divide Trail, (CMC-labeled - Segment 17) - Berthoud Pass to Herman Gulch TH.

--- View a beautiful alpine lake near the Continental Divide with wide flower fields, surrounded by peaks and places used for CMC hiking, climbing, ski mountaineering, and snowshoe trips.

--- See on-going rock slides and avalanche chutes.

Robbie Monsma, Durrie Monsma, and Jean Hart are leading a series of Skill-Builder Ascending Hikes this summer, mostly on Saturdays.  Good hikes plus some teaching. See our proposed summer schedule, subject to change.

We will meet at the Wooly Mammoth Park N Ride Section BB (western end across from the Exxon station) at 6:00am to transfer people and equipment, sort carpools, and then a prompt drive-away. The early time is to make sure we get a parking place and that the TH vault toilets are usable.

We will carpool on I-70 to the Herman Gulch TH, Exit 218, on the north side of the freeway.
