The Jones Pass Trail beginning at the Herman Gulch Trail  meanders up to a ridge top and traverses many miles over 13,000 ft peaks before reaching Jones Pass which is at the end of the road originating in Butler Gulch.  A day hike can be as far as a person wants to take this trail.  Several avalanche chutes exist in the Herman Gulch drainage. This route not recommended under avalanche conditions.

Citadel via Snoopy's Backside: 9.5 miles - 2,858 ft elevation gain

• This route begins at the Herman Gulch Trailhead at 10,300’ (3139 m) and follows the Herman Gulch trail to Herman Lake (11,964’, 3646 m) for 3.17 mi (5.1 km). After the lake, the route goes to the upper cirque of Herman Gulch for approx. 1 mile toward the Snoopy’s Backside couloir (12,550’ or 3825 m). From here, ascend the NE-facing couloir, topping out at the saddle of the East and West summits of the Citadel Peak. A brief scramble up a scree slope with a rock crux (class 4 in summer) will lead to the East Summit (13,158’ or 4010 m).
