Backcountry Skiing/Splitboarding – Cameron Pass

We will ski around the Cameron Pass area, probably on low-angle slopes (less than 30 degrees). Slope elevation (Above Tree Line, Near Tree Line, or Below Tree Line) and aspect will be confirmed with avalanche and weather forecasts. If you have not skied with me, please get in touch with me before signing.

Participants must be:

- Comfortable in the backcountry in variable weather and terrain conditions.

- Capable of climbing 2,000 ft, at an altitude above 10,000 ft

- Familiar with and able to use their touring gears (Skins, Skis with AT bindings, Boots, and Poles) and their avalanche rescue equipment (Avalanche Transceiver, Metal Shovel, and Probe)

- An intermediate skier or rider able to ski at least a black run at a ski resort.

- Must be prepared for winter mountain travel in variable weather at altitude

- Completion of an Avalanche Rescue Course within the last 5 years

We will meet at the Northwest corner of King Soopers Parking Lot on North College Avenue, Fort Collins (map to 1880 N. College Avenue or use this Google map link).  Arrive by 7:15 am for briefing and carpool organization, depart by 7:30.  If you would like to meet the group at the trailhead parking lot rather than the Fort Collins meetup spot, please let the leader know at least 48 hours in advance that you will be doing so.

Required Equipment

In addition to their 10 essentials (Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation-extra clothing, Illumination, First aid supplies, Fire, Repair kit and tools with knife, Nutrition-extra food, Hydration-extra water, Emergency shelter), participants should wear

  • Hard or softshell pants
  • Synthetic or merino wool base layer
  • Softshell jacket (optional)
  • Down or synthetic insulated jacket
  • Hardshell or water/wind-resistant jacket
  • Warm gloves
  • Cap or visor
  • Helmet
  • Sunglasses and goggles
  • Neck gaiter or buff
  • Medium backpack (Have space available to carry group emergency equipment)
  • Rocky Talkie (optional)

Participant must carry the following avalanche rescue equipment (Avalanche Transceiver, Metal Shovel, and Probe).
