Backcountry Skiing/Splitboarding – Section House & Ken's Cabin at Boreas Pass
This trip is an overnight backcountry ski trip to the Section House, which is a Summit Hut Association Hut near Breckenridge. We will start at the Boreas Pass trailhead and depending on conditions and group skill set will either follow the Boreas Pass/Bankers Tank Trail or the Boreas Pass Road approximately 6.5 miles to Boreas Pass. The Section House is a historic cabin that has been renovated for us as a backcountry hut with cooking equipment and bunks for up to 12 people. The next day there will be an optional climb to the summit of Boreas Peak, then the group will return down Boreas road to the trailhead.

Although the Boreas Pass Road is a mild grade and the road itself may not be considered avalanche terrain, the road crosses below avalanche terrain and under certain loading conditions (not expected on Dec 19) may be connected to avalanche terrain. Therefore ,Avalanche Terrain Avoidance, AIRE I, or equivalent avalanche training is highly recommended for this trip. The optional climb to Boreas Mountain will follow a route that avoids or mitigates avalanche terrain, however there is ample opportunity to stray into avalanche terrain if unexperienced in identification of such terrain. Therefore AIRE I or equivalent avalanche training is required for the optional Boreas Mountain climb.
To stay at the hut requires a reservation payable to the Summit County Hut Association, and a waiver must be signed when registering for the Hut. More information will be provided by the leader upon signing up for the trip.
