Bike – George S. Mickelson Trail

Overnight Bike packing trip/ bike tour through the Black Hills of South Dakota. This will be a gravel route on a rails-to trails bike path.

Itinerary

Friday-  In the morning we will drive to Edgemont SD, the southern terminus of the trail.  Friday afternoon we will then ride ~51 miles to Bismark Lake campground, right outside of Custer, SD.  We'll plan to have Dinner at a restaurant in the town of Custer.

Saturday-  Breakfast at a Custer restaurant.  Then we'll take the whole day to ride ~68 miles from Bismark Lake campground to Deadwood where we'll stay at a KOA campground Saturday Evening and enjoy the kitschy sights and sounds of Deadwood.

Sunday-  Sunday morning we'll take a biker shuttle from Deadwood to Edgemont where our cars are at and then drive back to Denver. 

As the roster is finalized and the weekend approaches we will coordinate a early morning carpool to drive to the southern end of the route in Edgemont, SD.

Required Equipment

  • Bike Gear
    • Gravel our touring bike would be best. MTBs would work as well, expect to be 'overbiked' for the route.
    • Helmet, sunglasses, bike gloves,  spare tube, bike multi tool & bike pump.
    • Bike bags of some sort, be it panniers or frame bags
  • Camping Gear
    • Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, change of clothes
      • We will coordinate sharing tents for those who are interested in sharing.
    • 10 essentials
  • Food-  Breakfast and Dinner will be had at restaurants along the route.  Pack your own snacks.  Lunch we will carry along the trail.  Lunches can be purchased at groceries at the start of our days either in Edgemont or Custer.
