George S. Mickelson Trail

The George S. Mickelson Trail is a 109-mile scenic crushed-stone rail-trail in South Dakota's Black Hills, running between Edgemont and Deadwood.

Open year-round, the Trail features over 100 converted railroad bridges, 4 tunnels, and moderate grades (mostly <4%) suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It offers stunning scenery and 15 convenient access points.  The Trail has its own excellent website for bikers.  See also Mickelson Trail Affiliates.

The trail is managed and well-maintained by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. Use requires a $5 daily or $20 annual pass, available online.

Mountain bikes are recommended for the gravel surface. Cell service can be spotty in some of the more remote sections.

The Mickelson Summer Trek is an annual, multi-day supported ride held in June.
