This 3-day backpacking trip to Devil’s Thumb Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness offers a balanced combination of moderate effort and high alpine reward, making it well-suited for those seeking both physical engagement and time to recover in a scenic setting. The approach gains elevation steadily through forest and subalpine terrain before transitioning into open alpine environments, where the lake sits beneath prominent granite features and expansive views. During our stay, we can use Day 2 to explore the surrounding area with optional hikes to Storm Lake, segments of the Continental Divide, or toward Devils Thumb itself, allowing for flexible mileage and elevation gain based on group preference and conditions. Overall, the itinerary is structured to provide both a rewarding destination and the opportunity for further exploration without requiring relocation of camp.
