Hiking – Canyonlands Needles District

The usual early fall conditions in Canyonlands include warm daytime temperatures and cool nights. Hiking involves regular dirt trail, some rock scrambling, possibly a ladder or two depending on trail and group preference. The leader will inquire before the trip about any gnat issues but usually knats are not a problem at this time of year. Abundant water is typically needed due to warmer and dryer conditions. The 10 essentials are needed. 

The campground has potable well water and a restroom as well as picnic tables.  Insect repellant is always a good idea in case gnats are bothersome. 

Entrance Fee and Cost...Their is a per car entrance fee into Canyonlands. If you have the senior park pass, it can be utilized. The cost of the campground for the 3 nights is approximately $35 per particpant and will be collected on-site.

Participants normally meet at the Wooden Shoe campground just inside the park Tuesday afternoon or evening to meet the group. Alternative meet points could be considered and we can help arrange possible car pools. The Canyonlands National Park Needles District is about 7.5 hours from Denver. For those arriving by late afternoon, a shorter early evening hike can be done.

The drive is typically I-70 to Utah exiting at the Moab exit to hiway 191. Moab is about 30 miles south and is the last stop for gasoline and supplies before proceeding south. (There is a small outpost store with some basic supplies just outside the park). From Moab, proceed south about 40 miles to hiway 211 and turn west on 211. Proceed about 34 miles to the park boundary. The Wooden Shoe campground is several miles into the park on a short loop south off  the main park road.
