Hiking – Canyonlands Needles District

Registration is only open to WSG: Fall Canyons trip (Moab) participants.

Hike will depart from the Elephant Hill TH (38.14164, -109.82746).  This is an out and back hike and will begin on the Chesler Park Trail for the first 2.8 miles before turning onto the Devils Kitchen Trail for the last mile out. At the 3.8 mile mark we will find a spot to have lunch overlooking Chesler Park.  We will return the way we came for a total of 7.6 miles.  The Chesler park trail is a busy trail, but we will be hiking with the traffic flow mostly (outbound in the morning and returning to the TH in the afternoon). 

Expect trail conditions to include lots of slickrock, some sandy spots, some mild scrambling, and some minor slot canyon hiking (again no gear will be required other than your hands to move around/over obstacles).  This is a  beautiful hike and Chesler Park is one of my favorites places in Moab area.   

We will depart Moab at 6:30 am and should be hiking by 9:00, which will insure TH parking on a busy fall weekend.  I will provide a steady push to keep us moving, but provide for adequate time in the scrambling and other slow sections, such that no one feels rushed.   Expect to get back to Moab between 4:00 and 5:00. This will be a long day once you include the travel time to/from Moab, so please bring adequate water and food for lunch/breaks.  There will be very little shade and it will likely be hot by the time we complete our hike.  Dogs are not allowed on these trails.
