This is one of the more beautiful 14er hikes, nestled among several taller neighbors in the Sawatch Range. Starting from the 4WD trailhead, the Class 2 hike begins with a slight incline for about 0.4 miles before turning upwards into a symphony of switchbacks and ending with a scramble at the top.
Please plan for 7+ hours on the trail to account for rest stops, snacks, and unanticipated delays. This is only an estimate, however, and our actual time likely will be different.
We will carpool from the Wooly Mammoth Park n Ride next to the Morrison exit on I-70 (Section BB, across from the Exxon station – bathrooms are out of service) at 3:15a for a 3:30a departure. Please LMK if you plan to meet at the trailhead.
Our hike will start at the S. Winfield/Lake Ann Trailhead. If we do not have a high clearance 4wd vehicle, we will start at the 2WD trailhead, adding 4 miles and 300 feet to our day. There is a restroom at the 2WD camping area just south of Winfield.
We will start hiking at 6:15a just before the 6:23a sunrise.
