Exposure, uneven terrain/obstacles, scree, ridges, some water access, but not for middle 2 miles of vertical hiking. This will be a moderate hiking pace with short/few human stops (and dog stops, as needed -- they have their own agendas).
This is an out and back hike. <3 miles up -- break at the top overlook -- then head back down to our cars. This will hopefully take no more than 3 hours, with few "human" stops.
Details: Park in main lot next to Starsmore center (if the road is closed, take a left at the intersection, and the overflow lot is on the right. Meet in front of Starsmore Discovery Center. Head 1.2miles up the Lower Columbine trail, to part of the Middle Columbine trail, and split off along the new Creekside trail (.8miles) to get to the traditional Mount Cutler trailhead. Hike up the Mount Cutler trailhead (1 mile) up to the overlook at 7,050’ (Mt Culter = 7,200’). Great location to explore, eat a snack and then head back down.
Meet at the Starsmore Discovery Center, 2120 S Cheyenne Cañon Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 (there has been significant roadwork around this road, please plan accordingly; also parking may have to be at the lot to the left)
Time: 7:30am (packed up and ready to go)
Required Equipment
Bring water, snacks, poles(if applicable), dog waste bags (if bringing a fur companion – be prepared to pack out dog waste), wind/weather protection; and (of course) your 10 essentials.
As traditional Colorado hiking goes, there are a lot of areas with scree that can make this hike slippery in areas.
Dogs are welcome to come but must be leashed, and hiker/dog friendly.
