Hiking – Pikes Peak - Rocky Mountain Peak

A 6-7 mile loop starting with the Manitou Incline, rising to an overlook of Rocky Mountain, a short bushwhack and a descent through the ruins of the Fremont Experimental Forest Station and then Barr Trail. Conditions will vary depending on snow or lack thereof: more snow=more challenging.

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 7.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,300 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 9,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5

Traction will be required if there is any snow or ice on the Incline/Barr Trail. Poles and gaiters recommended. A thermos with something warm to drink is also recommended.

The plan will be to traverse the ridge from Rocky Mountain to Long Ranch Road and then take the road to its intersection with the trail into the Experimental Forest and back to Barr. If there's time and interest we'll leave the trail for a short bit to find some of the metal tags on trees that were left a century ago or so, as well as check out the ruins.

We'll start hiking from the Barr Trail TH at 8:30 a.m. Meeting time and place for optional carpool TBD. Paid parking is available at the TH ($17.50).
