Rosalie Peak

Trip

Hiking – Rosalie Peak via Tanglewood Creek Trail and Pegmatite Points

This is a Difficult Hike based on the significant elevation gain, amount of off-trail travel, high elevation, pace, and terrain (off-trail, Class 2). Expect a cool start with the first 3.5 miles on forested trail with ample water, followed by almost 4 miles above timberline. We’ll likely see few people for much of the day.

  • Mileage: 10.8 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,300 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 13,579 ft
  • Pace: 2.75 mph on level trail (sustainable, not burst) and >1,000 ft/hr

Please make sure you're comfortable with the pace and elevation gain

Our trip has a Difficult rating due to elevation gain and pace. If you have not already been doing hikes of at least 3,500' vertical gain this season then this trip is not for you. Expect this trip to take 6-7 hours from the trailhead.

We will be taking a longer route to summit Rosalie Peak, with much more elevation gain, than the traditional route from the shoulder of Mt. Blue Sky. We’ll park at the Deer Creek TH and follow the Tanglewood Trail north to the ridgeline before turning west towards Rosalie Peak. We’ll be above timberline for much of the hike so please bring appropriate layers (including a rain jacket) for hiking at altitude. There is easy water access below timberline if you choose to treat your water.

I will send more information a few days before our trip, including a .gpx track and weather report. Please email to let me know if you have any immediate questions or if you'd like more information.

This route travels through the Mount Evans Wilderness within the South Platte Ranger District in Pike National Forest.

Our hike will start at the Deer Creek Trailhead on County Road 43 off US 285 (“Deer Creek Road”). We will be hiking in the South Platte Ranger District (Pike NF) primarily within Clear Creek County. Link for Google Maps. Our goal is to start hiking a little after 7:00 AM.

CMC suggests that all occupants of a vehicle share the costs of driving. Based on a reimbursement rate of $0.32 per mile, the total amount for the 72-mile roundtrip drive via US 285 is about $22 per vehicle. This cost typically is divided by the total number of people in the vehicle, including the driver.
