Hiking – West Mancos River Loop

The hike begins on the Transfer Trail at the Transfer Campground northeast of Mancos, but it includes parts of of four different trails. It's a gem in the western La Platas that has much to offer. This includes great views of the La Plata Mountains and time along a shaded, beautiful stream corridor.

There is a semi-steep trail down into and out of the West Mancos River canyon. Hiking pole or sticks can be helpful. There will be opportunities to get in the water to cool off, come prepared to do so if so desired.

An optional Western Slope Group social is planned afterwards at the Mancos Brewery just east of Mancos. Great pizza and beer. The tentative plan is to meet there between 3-5pm that afternoon.

Meet at Transfer Campground and Trailhead at 9:30am. Hike will begin at 10am sharp. Take US 160 from Durango 28 miles to Mancos, and turn right at the town's one stoplight onto CO 184 just 0.3 miles and go right (east) uphill on West Mancos Road (CR 42). It's 10 miles on this paved road to the Transfer Campground, where you'll veer right into the campground. Go 0.2 miles and park in the ample clearing next to the campground entrance to the left. Walk back across the road to the trailhead (N 37 28,100, W 108 12.476, 8,950 feet)
