West Mancos River Loop
The West Mancos River Loop is a easy-moderate river walk with stunning views of the La Plata Mountain. The West Mancos River Loop is part of the Transfer Recreation Area which includes many hiking trails and campgrounds.
The West Mancos River Loop is a short hike on sections of four trails. It takes you along the West Mancos Canyon rim, with more breathtaking views of the La Platas, then drops below the rim for an up-an-down ramble along the West Mancos River, before an ascent back to the rim. (Optional short hike --- before or after --- Big Al Trail: Barrier-free, surfaced gravel trail leading to deck overlooking Mancos Canyon with great views of the La Platas).
The trail begins on the Rim Trail, at a signboard at the West Mancos Overlook with stunning views of the La Platas and Hesperus Peak, one of the sacred mountains to the Ute, Dine and Navajo people.
Once at the Box Canyon Trail, continue the loop in a counterclockwise direction. The Box Canyon Trail switchbacks down to West Mancos Creek, through groves of aspen and ponderosa pine. At 1.75 miles from the trailhead, you come to the West Mancos Creek and Transfer trails. About a mile into the hike along the creek, you will come to a large boulder extending into the river. This is a great place to break and listen to the water, or to take a cool dip. After 3.4 miles from the trailhead, you come to the junction, the West Mancos Trail branches to the right, bear left here and head straight, up and out of the canyon. It is recommended to look back over your shoulder to catch more stunning views of Hesperus Mountain.
