Trail Maintenance – Greyrock Mountain TH

Greyrock Trail maintenance day! For a number of years NoCo CMC has had an agreement with the Forest Service to maintain the Greyrock Trail. A wooden sign near the trailhead kiosk names us as maintainers of this trail.

  • Northern Colorado
  • Conservation
  • Adults
  • Easy
  • Pace: Slow because stopping to lop vegetation.

Exact time and place will be sent to participants a few days before the trip, but expect to meet at carpool meeting place in Ft Collins about 7:00 a.m. TH parking is limited, so carpooling is required unless you have a specific reason you need to drive alone. If so, email me so we don't wait for you at the carpool meeting place.

This trip is strenuous but moderately paced. Unless we have cloud cover we will work in the sun. See reference to evaporative cooling clothing under "Required Equipment". Depending on how far we progress up the trail while working, we could gain as much as 1000 ft of elevation.

For a number of years NoCo CMC has had an agreement with the Forest Service to maintain the Greyrock Trail. A wooden sign near the trailhead kiosk names us as maintainers of this trail. Two years ago a Forest Service ranger supplied tools for large and smaller body sizes, and supervision for a day of simple trail maintenance tasks any physically fit body size could do. At the end of the day he said we accomplished much, and we had fun. Expect to "walk, stop, lop vegetation'" for about 6 miles while carrying a 3 lb lopping tool, your backpack containing the 10 essentials, and at least 2-3 liters of water.  Come join us. If I have not been on a trip with you recently, before you sign up, email me with RECENT hikes or activities you have done of similar or greater distance and altitude gain. Questions? Carolyn Hammond carolyncomt@gmail.com

I need 1 co-leader to volunteer, to accompany anyone who needs to leave early back to TH, and for any other needed assistance.

Required Equipment

Backpack containing 10 essentials, plenty of water for working in sun. Though we start in the morning, the day can get hot. Work gloves (preferably waterproof; any sturdy gloves will do), protective eyewear (sunglasses ok), long sleeves, long pants (work or hiking), work or hiking boots, gaitors or high socks pant legs can be tucked down into (biting creatures can crawl up pant legs when you lop into their territory with tools), sun head protection, insect repellent (we may be working in brush). Though not the height of tick season, we need to check each other periodically for ticks. Consider evaporative cooling hats, neck gaiters, etc containing gels or polymer crystals that cool the body. I see them through REI, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, etc. Arctic Air is one brand. Such a hat worked well all day for me maintaining this trail in the past. Or, take enough extra water to occasionally wet down your clothing.

Hard hats and tools for various body sizes will be provided by Forest Service.
