BPX 2-Day: Burning Bear Campground (RMNP)
Located on the Pike and San Isabel National Forest at an elevation of 9,813 feet and opened through the end of December each year, Burning Bear Campground is the perfect location for the annual BPX Winter Camping Gear Check.
Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 2-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.
Burning Bear Campground has 13 tent camping sites with vault toilets, picnic tables, firepits and grills.
The campground is nestled in a beautiful valley on the way to Guanella Pass. Although somewhat open, a scattering of ponderosa pines provides some privacy to campers.
Numerous winter hiking and snowshoeing opportunities are available within walking distance or a short drive from the campground, including Abyss Lake Trail, Burning Bear Trail, and Bruno Gulch Trail.
More information about Burning Bear Campground, including current campsite fees, can be found here. For winter camping, the campground is open as first-come, first-served from September 30 through December 31st and does not offer advance reservations.
A three day trip option is available for those who plan to test out their gear for multi-day trips.
